create-project: A Claude Skill for Kickstarting New Projects
Overview
For about a year now, almost everything I get help from AI with starts the same way: I make a new folder and open Claude Code inside it. Work projects, but also the personal side of life: my kid's school, our accounting, health paperwork. Each has its own folder, and Claude works inside it.
The part that kept bugging me was the setup. Every new folder meant the same routine: should this be in git, where do the PDFs and scans go, what must never end up on GitHub, which Claude account does it belong to. And a fresh session knew nothing about the project until I explained it all again. So I wrote a Claude skill for exactly that moment.
How it works
First it asks: is this code, a folder of notes and documents, or both? Which language should the docs be in? Is there a place for heavy files? Local git or a private GitHub repo? What is sensitive here? Then it builds: the real scaffold for code (uv init, create-next-app), an assets folder that is a symlink into synced cloud storage so documents are backed up but never touch git, and a private repo, after checking the right GitHub account is active.
My favourite part is two small files. CLAUDE.md holds what never changes about the project, STATUS.md holds where things stand today. When I come back days later, the new session reads STATUS first and simply picks up where we left off.
Open source
I cleaned it up so it works on anyone's machine and published it in my agent-skills collection. Everything personal moved into a config file outside the repo, so the version I use every day and the public one share the same code. On first run it detects your cloud folders and GitHub accounts, asks for the rest, and never asks again. Cloud storage, multiple GitHub accounts, a Claude account switcher and a project registry are all optional.
