Fridge Door: An Agentic Workflow for Busy Parents Struggling to Keep Up With Their Kids' School Life
Overview
This summer we tried a simple study and reading tracker at home, two Notion forms the kids filled in after studying. For a few weeks it worked. Then I got busy and stopped reminding them, and the entries stopped with me. I had become the one who nags, and nobody enjoyed that, me included.
So I rebuilt it around one idea: the system does the reminding and the checking, not the parent. The kids get short, friendly reminders on their phones and a three minute check-in each evening. On Sunday there is a short paper quiz at a shared table, phones away, on the topics they logged that week, because "I did it" and "I understood it" are not the same thing. A topic only counts as known after it is answered right in two different weeks.
The other half is everything school sends home: emails, newsletters, portal notices, trip letters, forms to sign and payments to make. An AI agent reads the school inbox with read-only access, keeps only what concerns each child, and puts the dates in one weekly view. On Sunday morning the parents get a single report: points, homework, topics to review, what school sent and what is coming next week.
How it works
Under the hood it is a Notion database behind the check-in forms, a messaging app for the reminders, a small always-on server for the fixed schedule, and Claude for the work that needs judgment: reading school email, writing the quiz and its answer key, marking the quiz from a photo of the paper, and writing the report. Effort earns points; falling short is never punished, free time simply starts once the gaps are filled.
Open source
Our own setup stays private, because it is full of my kids' details. What I published is a clean-room reference design, written from scratch and checked twice for anything personal: the full design, a privacy checklist, the Notion database templates, message templates, a config file, a Claude skill that writes the weekly report and the quiz, and an example week for a made-up family with a report, quiz sheets and answer keys as PDFs.
Some things it will never do, on purpose: no scrapers for specific school platforms, no getting around bot protection, no unofficial messaging bridges, and nothing goes to a child that a parent has not approved first.
